In January 2019, I co-hosted a yoga vacation in beautiful Jaco Beach, Costa Rica. My partner and I decided to call it a “yoga vacation” instead of a “yoga retreat” to give the trip a flexible, relaxed “choose your own adventure” vibe. The yoga was still plentiful, with two (optional) yoga classes per day offered, along with a variety of excursions, activities and nightlife experiences (all optional of course). Our intention was to provide an unforgettable experience for all types of yogis, and I definitely think we succeeded, as there was truly something for everyone on this trip!
Seventeen guests joined us for the six-day/five-night stay at a beautiful 14-bedroom luxury villa located right on the beach. The villa had two pools, two hot tubs, a volleyball court and gorgeous scenery in every direction.
The food on the trip was so fresh and incredible. Each morning, we woke up to a delicious breakfast prepared by our private chef. Lunch was catered daily by highly recommended local restaurants. Prior to the trip, our guests pre-selected their meal choices, that way there were no surprises.
About an hour after breakfast, we held a one hour vinyasa flow class on the tranquil grounds of the villa. One morning, an iguana decided to participate! He watched us for at least 20 minutes and gave a great “lizard” pose demo to the class!
Afternoons were a mix of adventure and relaxation. We had optional pre-planned excursions that the guests could sign up for. My favorite excursion was the surf lessons! With the combination of excellent instructors and long rolling waves, every guest who participated got up on their boards!
Other days consisted of jungle zip lining, ATV adventuring, lounging by the pool, hanging out at the beach and hiking. Miro Mountain was walking distance from the villa. On the way up, we spotted several spider monkeys playing in the canopy. I could have watched them for hours! The trail itself was unique, lined with mesmerizing Aztec-like artwork that led up to old ruins splashed with different genres of graffiti. The views were breathtaking at the top!
Sunset yoga was held on the beach in the evenings. This was usually more of a slower, stretch type of class to wind down after an action-packed day. The soothing sound of waves and fresh ocean air provided the perfect backdrop.
Every night, our chefs prepared an exquisite dinner spread. After dinner, guests would either go out on the town and enjoy some nightlife or just stay in and hang at the villa. We all went out together one night to a fun spot and enjoyed some live music!
On our last full day of the trip, we chartered a private catamaran cruise. The crew took excellent care of us, providing fresh fruit, snacks and refreshing beverages. We anchored close to a local beach and took turns diving and flipping into the ocean.
We returned from the catamaran excursion to a final dinner celebration. Each of our guests received a silly award certificate from us. Superlatives of sorts, mostly referencing a memorable or funny moment that occurred on the trip. Afterwards, there happened to be fireworks on the beach in front of our villa (unplanned, but perfectly timed).
The bigger surprise was the total lunar eclipse we were able to observe after the fireworks display. I usually pay attention to what the moon is up to, but it slipped my mind that this trip would coincide with a major celestial event. It was a magical experience to view the super moon/blood moon lunar eclipse from our villa. We watched the moon slowly turn red for about an hour as we chatted, laughed and enjoyed each other’s company.
There were so many highlights on this trip, but the best part is how we bonded. Many of the guests did not know each other prior to the vacation. , but by the end, had formed awesome new relationships. It was wonderful to see everyone having fun and getting along so well.
My next yoga vacation is in January, 2020. Same type of vibe, different location. Hopefully another lunar eclipse. Details will be in my next blog post!
